How may I help you? - How a research-design collaboration brought about a more user-centered approach to a Start AI assistant

User researchUser research
Overview

The Start team wanted to diversify its ecosystem beyond traditional news articles to include more user-generated content (UGC). One option explored for doing this was by integrating AI within the site to make it easier for users to create and publish content directly to the feed. At the time there were few models out there for what such an experience could look like. In this presentation I’ll discuss how, through several rounds of design-research collaboration, the team evolved a shared understanding and design direction for a Start AI assistant - one that could balance contending goals of increasing production of UGC on Start, while ensuring the content generated would be high-quality, non-duplicative, and user-led.
